New name adopted for northern section of Grendon Park

The section encompasses the reserve frontage to Hay Point’s Half Tide Beach and would extend from the entrance off Highwater Islet Drive to the entrance off McCarthy Street, south of Chain Lane.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the park had a great deal of cultural significance in the community.

“The park has played host to wartime remembrance events for many years, including the annual Anzac Day dawn service,” he said.

“The cenotaph, with its memorial wall, acts as a landmark feature along the esplanade strip.

“Council is pleased to support this name change, which promotes the cenotaph and reinforces the significance of this site in the community.

“The southern section of the park will retain the Grendon Park name, which pays tribute to the original European landowners in Hay Point, the Grendon family.”

Pioneer Fitzroy Highlands District RSL Branch District President Barry Vains OAM said the name change was symbolic.

“The cenotaph honours community members who served and died in wars as well as those that served in our nation’s regular and voluntary armed forces,” he said.

“We are thrilled that our application to change the name of the northern section of Grendon Park has been approved as the new name symbolises its importance from a cultural and military perspective.

“In addition to council, we would also like to thank BM Alliance Coal Operations, Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal and North Queensland Bulk Ports for their support of this name change.

“We will be holding our annual Anzac Day dawn service at Half Tide Beach Memorial Park at 5.30am on April 25 for anyone who wishes to attend and commemorate with us.”

The RSL, with the help of the community, will also be hosting a special event dedicated to the memorial park as well as unveiling a new memorial wall on Saturday, May 22, at 5pm at Half Tide Beach Memorial Park.
