School holiday success for Sarina Sugar Shed

Published: 14 Jul 2021

During a difficult period for the state’s tourism and hospitality industry, Sarina Sugar Shed continues to go from strength to strength, achieving record visitation for the recent school holiday period.

More than 2000 people visited Sarina Sugar Shed over the past two weeks, with extra tours being added to meet demand.

Production of alcohol and the Chefs’ Gusto range of sauces, chutneys and relishes was also ramped up to keep the shelves continually stocked due to strong sales.

Deputy Mayor Karen May said it was a fantastic result for Sarina Sugar Shed and our region.

“We have a wonderful food tourism attraction on our doorstep, and we are delighted that so many people are discovering it,” Cr May said.

“It’s a credit to Mackay Isaac Tourism and all the local tourism operators that the Mackay region continues to attract many visitors, especially during this COVID-impacted time,” she said.

Sarina Sugar Shed coordinator Ian Mason said all aspects of the tourism facility have been showing growth.

“It is a really challenging time for the tourism and hospitality sector, but we have worked hard to grow our tours, our product sales and our café offerings and it is very satisfying to see this work pay dividends,” Mr Mason said.
