Last Speed Date the Collection for the year! Meet artists’ books from the Mackay Regional Council Art Collection. Our informal Speed date the Collection night is an opportunity for the community to ‘meet’ artists’ books from the Collection in an enjoyable way. Participants will become familiar with artists’ books held in the Mackay Regional Council Art Collection in a social, interactive context.

Three artists present three different artwork displays using prints, paintings and miniature steel sculptures made from recycled nuts, bolts and steel. The exhibition is on display in the Lagoons Gallery within the Botanic Gardens café. Open Wednesday to Friday, 9am to 2pm, and weekends 8am to 4pm.

To celebrate the launch of Ride Mackay, council is giving away $2000 in gift vouchers thanks to Corry Cycles and Mackay Cycles! To enter, visit one of the Ride Mackay trails, scan the QR code and fill out the entry form. The competition will run until Tuesday, November 30.

8) Jenna Lee: Cont.ained

Jenna Lee is an artist of Indigenous (Larrakia, Wardaman, and Karrajarri), Asian (Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino) and Anglo-Australian ancestry who manipulates paper to explore her many overlapping identities. Her research into ancestral cultural objects and archival practices inform an artist's book-making practice that often imitates the display of specimens or artefacts.

9) Jonathan McBurnie: Birdland

North Queensland artist Jonathan McBurnie draws upon the aesthetics of professional wrestling. The exhibition of new drawings on a large, immersive scale are inspired by parallels between professional wrestling and McBurnie’s personal experience of continuing his creative practice amid illness and the impact of an ongoing recovery.

2022 Libris Awards opening

Artspace Mackay’s biennial event, the Libris Awards, brings together works by leading and emerging artist book makers from across the country. The Awards are a chance to celebrate the art form and build on the gallery’s significant artist book collection through the competition’s acquisitive prizes. With four awards, including special categories for locally based artists and art students, the prize offers $14,500 in total prize money. The Awards open on Tuesday, November 30 and close on Wednesday, January 5.
