AFLW Friday Night Lights set for Mackay

Mackay will host its first-ever NAB AFLW Premiership Season match in 2020 when the Gold Coast SUNS welcome the Geelong Cats to Great Barrier Reef Arena on March 6 at 6.10pm.

It will be the club’s first primetime Friday night match in the 2020 NAB AFLW season.

Gold Coast SUNS Head of Women’s Football Fiona McLarty said the club was excited to bring a regular season game to Mackay for the next three years.

“We know North Queensland fans are passionate about AFL and women’s sport, so we’re thrilled to be able to play a game up in Mackay with the support of the AFL and through our partnership with Mackay Regional Council,” McLarty said.

“As a club we have established significant support in North Queensland over the last decade and our women’s program in particular is buoyed by the opportunity to help inspire the next generation of female athletes.

“North Queensland is also a key recruitment catchment for the Gold Coast SUNS Talent Academy which has already seen three girls drafted to the AFLW team for next year.

“We can’t wait to come up and play here next year – it’s going to be great to play on a Friday night and we’ll be looking forward to seeing a big local crowd come out to support the SUNS in our inaugural AFLW season.”

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said it was exciting for the city to be hosting its first-ever AFLW match at Great Barrier Reef Arena.

“We’re going to see for the first time ever under the lights here at Mackay at Harrup Park, the Gold Coast SUNS taking on Geelong,” Mayor Williamson said.

“We want to see everybody down supporting the Gold Coast SUNS, bring the family down it will be a tremendous night on Friday, March 6.”

The match will be broadcast nationally on Fox Footy.
