Anzac Day services will commemorate veterans

Published: 17 Apr 2023

ANZAC Day is just one week away and there are 25 services being held across the region to commemorate our veterans.

This year will see the Mackay main Anzac Day parade assembly point moved to Caneland Central.

This will provide parade participants with more space to spread out, with a drop off zone located along Matsuura Drive, and plenty of parking available for those who want to park their vehicles and assemble along the new route.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the parade had grown in size in recent years and required a bigger venue.

“In just a few short years the number of students marching in the parade has grown from 5000 to 6000 students,” Mayor Williamson said.

“It’s tremendous to see so many students wanting to be involved and pay their tributes to our veterans as they are the future of Anzac Day,” he said.

“The new venue will provide veterans and students with ample room and the undercover car park will ensure that everyone participating in the parade is protected from the elements.

“Veterans will also now lead the march ahead of students in the Mackay main parade following a request that council received from local veterans in the community.”

Day care students will join the march from Axiom College on Wellington Street.

The Mackay dawn parade route will remain the same route as in previous years.

More details can be found on council’s website.
