Bluewater Lagoon closed until further notice

Bluewater Lagoon will not reopen as planned tomorrow (Wednesday, September 1) as council is investigating serious structural issues.

A new reopening date is unknown until the extent of the structural concerns is determined and a plan is put in place to remedy them.

Council will keep the public updated and in the interim is providing free entry at the Mackay ARC on Saturdays and Sundays.

Mayor Greg Williamson said staff recently identified the lagoon was losing a significant amount of water towards the end of the winter shutdown.

He said preliminary investigations showed damage to pipes in the complex.

“Added to that, when the water was drained to help with investigations, some other issues with the lining were identified.

“We are planning to use the in-house expertise of council’s Water Services team to examine the pipes in more detail using their CCTV pipe inspection cameras.

“At this stage, there is no date on when the Bluewater Lagoon will be reopened to the public as more investigations need to be carried out.”

However, Mayor Williamson said council would offer free weekend entry to Mackay ARC until Bluewater Lagoon could be reopened to the public.

“We understand the inconvenience this closure will have on families, so we want to offer an alternative option where residents can cool down over the warmer months,” he said.

“The Mackay ARC has its inflatables on weekends, so this will provide some great family fun.”
