Bluewater Lagoon’s main lagoon reopens

Published: 01 Dec 2021

The Bluewater Lagoon’s main lagoon has reopened today (Wednesday, December 1).

The top lagoon is expected to be ready for the public to enjoy by this weekend, weather permitting.

The Bluewater Lagoon has been closed since mid-July after staff identified a large leak during the winter maintenance period, which prevented the facility from reopening in September as scheduled.

Last month council was able to reopen the splashpad and children’s pool, but the lagoons remained closed while staff worked on the water chemistry in the larger body of water.

Mayor Greg Williamson said council was excited to reopen the main lagoon in time for the December school holidays.

“We were fortunate to be able to source a contractor who could complete temporary repairs that have allowed us to reopen the lagoon for summer and the rest of the season,” he said.

“The weather has certainly been warming up over the last few weeks and we are looking forward to welcoming people back to the Bluewater Lagoon.

“While it has been tremendous to see so many people enjoying our other aquatic facilities while we’ve been completing repairs, such as the Mackay ARC, we’re excited to welcome the public back to our most popular aquatic facility for the festive season.”

The Bluewater Lagoon will be open every day (except Christmas Day) from 9am to 5.45pm until the end of March.

The facility will then operate from 9am to 4.45pm from April until it closes for winter.

During the winter maintenance in 2022 council will complete repairs that will provide a long-term solution to the issues at Bluewater Lagoon, which will include further repairs to the main circulation line and resurfacing the lagoon pools.
