Botanic Gardens celebrates 20 years at Open Day

Published: 15 May 2023

Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens is celebrating its 20th birthday this month and two special guests will be dropping in to join the celebrations.

Botanic Gardens Day ambassador Costa Georgiadis, who is best known as the host of ABC’s Gardening Australia, will be attending the Botanic Gardens Open Day on Saturday, May 27, from 8am until noon.

Landscape architect Lawrie Smith, who is the mastermind behind the design and layout of Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens, will also be in attendance for talks and a Q&A session.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the Botanic Gardens had become an iconic destination for both locals and visitors to the region over the last 20 years.

“Whether it’s for socialising, exercising, attending community events, admiring the flora and fauna or as a backdrop for a romantic wedding, the Botanic Gardens truly represents the best of what’s on offer in Mackay,” Mayor Williamson said.

“It’s only fitting that we mark its 20th birthday with an event that celebrates all things botanic,” he said.

“Next Saturday, the Botanic Gardens’ Tropical Sun Lawn will come alive with community demonstrations and stalls, orchid sales, free guided walks, and plenty of activities for the kids.

“Native Plants Queensland - Society for Growing Australian Plants Mackay branch will also be giving away Mt Blackwood Holly plants on the day, which is the plant featured in the Botanic Gardens’ logo.

“It’s free to attend, so bring your family and friends along and celebrate at the Botanic Gardens on their big day.”
