Community input shapes the Finch Hatton trailhead master plan

Published: 04 Jan 2022

The Finch Hatton trailhead will be a place where you start and finish your mountain bike adventure.

A master plan concept for the Finch Hatton Trailhead site has been developed following extensive consultation with the Pioneer Valley community, as well as workshops with key project stakeholders and internationally recognised trail experts, World Trail.

Mayor Greg Williamson said earlier this year (April), three concept designs were released to the public for feedback.

“During the workshops and online community consultation period, there was overwhelming support for concept 1 and 2 and a landscape buffer zone between the residential properties and the trailhead,” Mayor Williamson said.

“We listened and the master plan reflects community and industry feedback,” he said.

The plan also includes historical features, a pump track, and facilities that will support mountain bike riders including amenities block, event set up area/overflow parking, recreational open space and a connection to the trails.

The development of a world-class network of mountain bike trails in the Pioneer Valley provides a unique opportunity to grow the tourism economy and deliver a destination product that has extensive economic benefits to Finch Hatton, Eungella and the wider Mackay region.

When fully operational, the trails are estimated to generate an additional $18 million annual economic benefit in the Mackay region.

Mayor Williamson said the next step now is to move into detailed design, and the master plan will provide a solid base for this work.

The Queensland Government has contributed $500,000 towards design elements of the project including detailed design of the trailhead and environmental assessments.
