Council kicks in to help get residents active

The new Activate Mackay Region program offers residents the choice of six different exercise classes for the price of a cup of coffee.

Zumba, ninja warrior, zuu, yoga, pilates and aqua fitness are all on offer for just five dollars per session (paid directly to the service providers).

Council’s Sport and Recreation Advisory Committee chair Cr Michelle Green said the program kicked off this week and featured five experienced local fitness providers hosting classes in accessible locations.

“It’s a really great initiative that offers residents an affordable way to boost their health, get active, socialise and learn some new exercise skills,” Cr Green said.

“There are some really interesting new programs on offer that most people will never have tried before,” she said.

“The Ninja Hub, for example, are hosting zuu classes.

“Zuu is a high intensity, low impact interval training workout with a zoo-inspired twist.

“Many of the bodyweight moves copy animal movements – like slithering like an iguana, doing frog leaps and bear crawls.”

There is also introductory ninja training, complete with warped walls and salmon ladders (chin-up towers where you climb by throwing the bar upwards during each chin-up).

Zumba at the Bluewater Quay with Elena is also on offer if you enjoy a little rhythm with your high energy workouts.

For those looking for a less adventurous exercise class, yoga at the Botanic Gardens, pilates at Blacks Beach Park, or aqua fitness in the Bluewater Lagoon might be more your style.
