Council to send 2020 out with a bang

Published: 23 Dec 2020

It hasn’t been the best year for partying, but council is determined 2020 will go out with a bang!

The MECC is hosting a free New Year’s Eve family entertainment extravaganza from 6pm to 9pm and council is also sponsoring a fireworks spectacular at the Mackay Showgrounds.

Community and Client Services director Angela Hays said council funding would allow the fireworks to be shot higher than usual to allow spectators to enjoy them while social distancing throughout the city.

“We are sponsoring fireworks displays at 9pm and at midnight, so make sure you head outside to enjoy the pyrotechnics if you’re able to,” Ms Hays said.

Council is also reminding residents to ensure their pets are locked up safe and secure before the display.

Ms Hays encouraged residents to grab their tickets for the MECC’s New Year’s show as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

“It’s a free show, but residents need to book tickets to allow for contact tracing,” she said.

“The MECC auditorium is able to operate at 100 per cent capacity, but seating is filling fast.

“There will be three hours of non-stop family-friendly entertainment, including Irish dancing, Sensory Circus, free face painting, local musical talent like Jade Fiyen and Folks Like Us, and, of course, a great line-up of performances from the Mackay Musical Comedy Players.

“The group will perform hits from Wicked and Hairspray and songs like Over the Rainbow by none other than Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.”

Doors to the MECC North Foyer open at 4.30pm and face painting, the bar and café will be open for those wanting to relax before the show.
