Creative markets packed with artisan stallholders

Next Sunday (September 19), from 1pm to 4pm, more than 30 vibrant artisans will bring the Mackay Civic Precinct to life.
Showcasing everything from paintings and pottery to clutches and kokedamas, the Rock Paper Scissors Art and Design Market attracts an eclectic mix of talented stallholders.
Add in live entertainment and onsite food and coffee vendors and you have an awesome afternoon outing for anyone with an interest in hand-crafted creations.
Deputy Mayor Karen May said Rock Paper Scissors had broad community appeal.
“It’s a great afternoon out with the family, where you can relax on the lawn beside Artspace and enjoy some afternoon tea and live music from Tate Obst, Tiffany Grace and Jonte,” Cr May said.
“Or, if you are a bit of a treasure hunter after something beautiful and original, then you would struggle to find a larger mix of talented creators in one place,” she said.
“Many residents use Rock Paper Scissors as a chance to get a head start on their Christmas shopping, because it’s a great way to find thoughtful gifts that are one-of-a-kind.”
“This event is a wonderful showcase of local talent, and I would really encourage everyone to come out and support our local creative community.”
Rock Paper Scissors is curated by the team at Artspace Mackay and director Tracey Heathwood said this year’s applicant pool had been exceptional.
“There’s such a fantastic range of artisans and creators,” Ms Heathwood said.
“We’ve got Aboriginal artifacts; woven, wooden, clay, natural and recycled jewellery; ceramics and pottery; clutches, bags and baskets; wood and resin works; hand-made and vintage clothing; paintings, drawings and prints; textiles; leather products and much more,” she said.
Ms Heathwood said there was also plenty happening inside Artspace Mackay during the afternoon.
“We’ve got free family drop-in activities in our workshop room, for the school holidays, where you can try your hand at sand drawing,” she said.
“The inclusive community choir, With One Voice Mackay & Surrounds Choir is also performing inside the gallery – from 1.45pm to 2pm and again for 15 minutes at 2.45pm.
“And, of course, we have four exciting exhibitions to enjoy in our gallery spaces.”
