Drone to complete environmental testing

Published: 06 Nov 2020

Council's Waste Services will be using a drone to conduct environmental testing at some of our landfill sites.

The testing will take place between Monday, November 9 and Wednesday, November 11.

The drone uses an infrared system to measure levels of different atmospheric gases in the area. The presence of gases does not pose a threat to residents or the environment.

Council collects the data every six months to identify and monitor any changes.

Residents are assured there is no camera on the drone, so it cannot capture any images of properties, or record any personal information.

The use of the drone for environmental testing means that council can access more areas and reduce our carbon footprint by limiting the amount of vehicle travel required.

It also reduces the risk of accident to staff members and manhours needed to complete the task.

Before the use of drones, monitoring was undertaken by a staff member walking across the landfills with a handheld monitor.

The uneven surface was a trip hazard and the task took two to three days to complete. Drones can complete the testing in just a few hours.

Residents in nearby properties will have received a letter from council advising them of the testing. For more information contact council on 1300 622 529.
