Exhibition provides necessary recognition for Artel artists

Published: 11 Oct 2019

Reasonable & Necessary: prints and artist books by Artel Artists is the first-ever touring exhibition of a group of 33 professional artists, some of whom have complex and profound disabilities.

Artel is the creative industries studio of CPL (Choice, Passion, Life). Based in Redcliffe, it offers a space for these artists to express themselves as a dynamic artistic movement.

The exhibition will be officially opened in Gallery Three at Artspace Mackay on Friday, October 18.

Cr Fran Mann said Artspace was one of 11 galleries in Queensland presenting this inspiring exhibition.

Reasonable & Necessary showcases the outstanding talents of these artists and provides valuable professional development and profile-raising opportunities for them.

“The exhibition also features a free floor talk on Saturday by CPL’s Artel Visual Art Coordinator Louise Taylor and Artel Artist Sara Wyatt, and two lino printing workshops on Sunday.

“The floor talk will highlight the tools created to support artists with challenging physical disabilities to ‘access’ their work.

“The exhibition will also benefit our own community, offering an opportunity to learn about the support methods, studio practices and adapted tools unique to the Artel Studio,” she said.

The floor talk is for educators, artsworkers, people working in the disability sector, parents and friends of people with a disability.

Exhibition Curator, Lynne Seear, has described the works as both refreshingly unpretentious and exceedingly skilled. She has grouped the works into eight themes: Places, People, Family, Voices, Sailing, Driving, Mark Making and Artist Books.

The title for this exhibition is taken from National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) criteria. With the uncertainty surrounding the NDIS, Artel creative industries studio is not just reasonable and necessary, but essential, providing real career prospects for artists.

Reasonable & Necessary is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
