Family Fun Day aims to unite community against DFV

Manager of The Broken Ballerina Foundation Jules Thompson, Shandee Blackburn’s mother Vicki Blackburn and Australian Rugby League representative player and development officer Renae Kunst will be special guests at the event.

Held at John Breen Park this Saturday (May 25), from 10am to 2pm, the event will be a great free outing for families that promotes the message of no tolerance for domestic and family violence (DFV).

There will be a free sausage sizzle provided by the West Mackay Rotary Club, free children’s activities – including a petting zoo, face painting and jumping castles – and market stalls and information stalls will also be available.

A full program of entertainment will also be on offer featuring local performers and singers.

Mayor Greg Williamson will be in attendance and said while the day was a fun day aimed at bringing families together, it was also a day aimed at raising awareness.

“This tremendous event is very much a show of solidarity – it’s our region’s way of saying we are a united, caring and respectful community that will not tolerate domestic and family violence,” Cr Williamson said.

“I hope to see everyone down at John Breen Park for the event,” he said.  “And make sure you grab a Mackay Draws the Line bumper or wheelie bin sticker while you’re there.

“These stickers are a tremendous way of showing your support during Domestic Violence Prevention Month (May) and they also have vital contact information for anyone affected by domestic or family violence.”

The Mackay Says No Family Fun Day is an initiative of the Domestic Violence Resource Service Mackay and Region (DVRS) and is supported by council, the Queensland Government, Mackay Women’s Centre and Mackay Women’s Sexual Assault Service.
