Fifth Lane comes alive for the festive season

The revamped Fifth Lane in the City Centre is set to come alive on Friday nights over summer.

Small activations will be staged in Fifth Lane each Friday evening from 5pm to 8pm, starting this week (November 19).

Mayor Greg Williamson said the activations, to run until December 17, were not large-scale events.

“Rather, they are small activations – ranging from face painting and musicians to Sensory Circus performers – to encourage families to visit the revamped space,” Mayor Williamson said.

“While there, families are reminded to check out the augmented reality experiences featuring the lane’s artwork, which has been a feature for some time,” he said.

Mayor Greg Williamson said council and the Mackay Chamber of Commerce were encouraging City Centre hospitality business to offer Friday night specials during the campaign.

“We’re also suggesting retail businesses stay open later for extended trading in the lead-up to Christmas,” he said.

Mayor Williamson said Fifth Lane was a perfect venue for placemaking and council was keen to talk to any event organisers who had ideas that would activate the space in the future.

“The small-scale events in Fifth lane will help showcase the potential of this centrally-located space,” he said.

Activities for this Friday night include face painting, French Press Band and Sensory Circus.
