Grants to create iconic attractions

The program assisted in funding two iconic tourism drivers last year including the revitalisation of Slade Point water tower and Fifth Lane in the City Centre, which both received $7500 to put towards upgrades.

Cr Amanda Camm said the success of these projects had prompted a second round of funding.

“Installing an impressive super-mural on the Slade Point water tower not only improved the visual amenity of the area, but it has also increased visitation by locals and tourists,” Cr Camm said.

“Likewise, Fifth Lane has been effective in drawing more people into the Mackay City Centre.

“Previously an uninspiring and under-utilised area, the art installations and light displays have beautified Fifth Lane and have helped make it a safe, clean and friendly environment.

“The interactive app that makes the artwork come alive is also a distinctive feature that keeps people coming back as new updates are added.”

Cr Camm encouraged people with ideas for unique public art, street art or events that highlight specific locations in the region to apply for an AMP grant.

“Communities with a strong sense of place have a unique attractiveness, which can encourage people to live, work, play and visit our region,” she said.

“These places are drivers of economic development, are a source of community pride and enrich the quality of our lives.”

Round two of the AMP placemaking grant program is now open.

Applications must be completed and submitted via Smarty Grants at by March 30, 2020.

The AMP program can fund up to 80 per cent of the project budget.
