Have your say on McEwens Beach

Council is continuing to take proactive steps towards protecting and enhancing the region’s beaches into the future.

A draft local coastal plan (LCP) for McEwens Beach has now been released for public comment as part of a strategic and coordinated approach to managing the region’s coastlines.

Cr Karen May said the plan contained a detailed list of recommendations for McEwens Beach.

“Some of the recommendations include weed control, revegetation, fencing, monitoring of erosion, the installation of interpretive signage and investigating additional recreational opportunities,” she said.

“McEwens Beach draft LCP is part of a wider strategy, which incorporates more than 20 local coastal plans for the region that have already been adopted.

“The plans will guide council in managing the impacts of a changing climate to protect the coastline for future generations while working with local residents to take advantage of potential recreational and tourism opportunities.”

Residents can have their say at a community catch-up on Saturday, September 14, from 2pm to 4pm at Reg Jones Park on Aura Street, McEwens Beach.

Those who can’t attend the catch-up can provide feedback online at Connecting Mackay. Feedback closes on September 30.

Council will also be releasing a local coastal plan for St Helens Beach later this year.
