Have your say on the region’s future economic growth

Council has released two draft strategies for public consultation.

The Economic Development Strategy 2020-2025 and Mackay Region Events Strategy 2020-2025 are online and open for comment.

Deputy Mayor Amanda Camm said both strategies reflected the Mackay region – diverse, innovative, forward thinking and full of exciting opportunities.

“To ensure that the region we live, work and play in continues to thrive, council needs to have clear strategies and focuses outlined,” Cr Camm said.

“While the Mackay region we all know, and love is heading in the right direction, and our future in terms of economic prosperity looks bright, there is plenty of work to do,” she said

The Economic Development Strategy sets a clear framework designed to support employment and investment outcomes through advocacy and leadership, investment attraction, industry development and workforce and skills.

The Mackay Region Events Strategy focuses on the acquisition and support of events and increased economic prosperity through events.

As part of the 2015-2016 budget, council introduced the Invest Mackay Events and Conference Attraction Program which continues to go from strength to strength.

Since then, council has invested $4.8 million towards the support of attracting major sporting events, concerts and conferences to stimulate the local economy.

Cr Camm said council was a proud supporter of attracting events and conferences to the region and recognised the positive flow-on effects this had towards generating employment, attracting investment and enhancing tourism opportunities.

“We are committed to continuing the work to diversify and evolve the region so that it is best placed to capitalise on economic growth opportunities,” she said.

“The time is right to build on the foundations we currently have in place and that’s what these documents outline.”
