Help celebrate Sarina’s super women

Published: 31 Mar 2022

After what has been a difficult 12 months, the Sarina Neighbourhood Centre is looking to recognise amazing women from Sarina.

Deputy Mayor Karen May said she was proud of how tight knit the Sarina community was and how there were so many women who constantly stood up when others were in need.

“When the going gets tough, we see some amazing women really come to the fore – volunteers, community leaders, mentors, teachers, carers and those who simply go above and beyond for the community,” Cr May said.

“The Celebrating Sarina Women Awards are the community’s chance to celebrate and recognise those women,” she said.

“The Sarina Neighbourhood Centre team do an amazing job each year coordinating this celebration, but it all starts with the nominations, so now is the time to put those names forward.”

Cr May said nominations for the 2022 awards had opened later than usual to allow for a safer awards event.

“We’ve been able to secure Third Ground Coffee as the awards celebration venue, which has an excellent outdoor space, meaning we can recognise nominees regardless of their vaccination status,” she said.

This year’s award categories include:

  • Junior – Noise Maker (positive community contribution)
  • Senior – Noise Maker (positive community contribution)
  • Mary Malone Perpetual Award (enhancing community capacity).

A junior is an amazing woman up to the age of 25 and a senior is an amazing woman over the age of 25.  The Mary Malone Award is open to all age groups.

To nominate someone, email their names, contact details and a brief paragraph about them to the Sarina Neighbourhood Centre team at sarinaneighbourhoodcentre@mackay.qld.gov.au

Don’t forget to include your name, email and phone number and let us know if you wish to remain anonymous. Nominations close midnight, Friday, April 22.

For more information, call the Neighbourhood Centre on 4961 9283 or 4961 9290.

The Mary Malone Perpetual Award was created in honour of the contributions made by Mary Malone to the Sarina community and seeks nominees who likewise positively impact Sarina.  This award is selected by a panel of judges.

The Celebrating Sarina Women Awards are an initiative of the Sarina Neighbourhood Centre and Mackay Regional Council and are supported by the Queensland Government.
