Incorrect disposal of oil cans cause a big mess

Published: 14 Jan 2022

Mackay region residents are being reminded that motor oil cans cannot be disposed of in their kerbside waste or recycling bins.

In a recent incident, oil spilled from a general waste bin and onto the road and gutter as a JJ Richards truck emptied it.

In another incident, a sealed oil can burst open while being crushed by the truck’s hopper, causing a mess inside and a potential fire hazard.

All residents are encouraged to dispose of their domestic motor oil responsibly at one of council’s waste transfer stations.

Residents who are found to have incorrectly disposed of oil cans may be held responsible for the cost of cleaning the spill.

Domestic motor oil up to 20 litres can be disposed of free-of-charge at any of council’s Rural Transfer Stations, as well as the Paget Waste Management Centre.

Each of these locations has an oil bay especially for the disposal of motor oil.
