Libraries unplug to explore computer science

Mackay Regional Council Libraries are offering a special computer class – without computers.

For National Science Week, the Young Adult team are digging into binary code and the Matrix-like world of zeros and ones.

Dubbed Computer Science Unplugged, the session will be held at Dudley Denny City Library next Tuesday, August 13, from 3.30pm to 5pm.

Cr Fran Mann said binary was the language of computers and this was an exciting class that libraries were offering to explain how computers work.

“Our Young Adults team have put together some really interesting games and activities to get 12 to 18-year-olds thinking like a computer,” Cr Mann said.

She said the group would learn how to send data without computers and would explore the “living internet”.

Bookings are required for this session and numbers are limited.

To secure your spot, head to mackay.qld.gov.au/whatson or call 4961 9387.

If you want to take your interest in coding to the next level, make sure you grab the spring What’s on Booklet for information on sessions covering everything from robotics to hacking Christmas lights with your own micro-controller.
