Local events celebrate women

To celebrate the amazing women in our region, council has thrown its support behind a suite of local Queensland Women’s Week events.

Cr Fran Mann said there was a sensational variety of events on offer from March 2 to 10.

“We are sponsoring the Zonta Mackay International Women’s Day ‘More Powerful Together’ Luncheon on Sunday, March 10, at 10am,” Cr Mann said.

“This event features amazing guest speaker, Dr Helena Popovic MBBS,” she said.

“Helena is a medical doctor, a leading authority on improving brain function, a best-selling author and an international speaker with a mission to educate rather than medicate.”

Tickets for the Zonta Luncheon are still available through the MECC (online and at the Box Office), but close on Monday, March 4.

Also held on Sunday, March 10, is the live-streaming event at the MECC for the All About Women Satellite 2019.

“You don't need to be at the Sydney Opera House to experience the main stage action of the All About Women Festival,” Cr Mann said.

“We will be livestreaming the ‘#MeToo, Year Two’ panel directly to the MECC meeting rooms from noon to 1.30pm,” she said.

“All About Women features emerging new voices from around the world speaking about future directions in feminism.

“Entry costs just a gold coin donation.”

Cr Mann said council, through the Sarina Neighbourhood Centre, was also hosting the Sarina Women’s Week Awards Dinner on March 8 at the Bob Wood Cultural Hall.

“Tickets are almost sold out for this fantastic event that recognises local women who contribute to our community,” she said.

Also supported by council during Queensland Women’s Week is the RIN International Women’s Day Business Lunch (sold out) and the Artspace Mackay exhibition: Foundations in Drawing, which features 11 local female artists.

Council is partnering with George Street Neighbourhood Centre (GSNC) to deliver a series of free financial fitness workshops for women.

The workshops will be held from March 4 to 7 at the Jubilee Community Centre, with refreshments and transport assistance available.
