Lyn Laver-Ahmat showcases regional beauty at Artspace

Published: 26 Nov 2020

Lyn Laver-Ahmat is inspired by the natural beauty of landscapes around our region and Australia.

And, lucky for visitors to Artspace Mackay, she is sharing that inspiration with others through an exhibition called Lyn Laver-Ahmat: Light on Landscape, which kicks off in the Foundation Gallery on Saturday, December 5.

Lyn will also be delivering a free floor talk on Thursday, December 3, at 6pm.

Lyn will take art-lovers through a variety of techniques and materials she uses to create colour, space and texture and how she portrays the beauty of light and how it defines the surface of things like land, sky and water.

Mayor Greg Williamson said it wasn’t just Lyn’s artworks that inspired people.

“Lyn has been an art teacher for 20 years, with half of that time spent teaching in Queensland schools, most recently at North Mackay High School,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Her floor talk is not to be missed and will undoubtedly give a great insight into the creative process behind her magical landscapes,” he said.

Lyn Laver-Ahmat: Light on Landscape features works inspired by many areas that will be familiar to residents.

McCreadys Creek at Slade Point, where Lyn lives, is one stunning landscape that has been captured in the work “Standing Stilts”.

“The mangrove creek where I walk most mornings is a microcosm of wonderous plant life, waterways and little sea creatures,” Lyn said. “The mangroves sometimes seem to hover above the water."

Likewise, the artist spent a lot of time at Nindaroo this year during lockdown while recovering from a wrist injury and that scene is captured in the work “Nindaroo Afternoon”.

“It has a lot of varying shades of green hills with cows and fences,” she said. “The scenery shows multiple perspectives that seem to distort as houses and fences appear on different levels."

Due to social distancing restrictions, bookings for all Artspace events are essential and Lyn’s floor talk will fill up fast, so act quickly to avoid disappointment.

Artspace Mackay is also holding an exhibition opening to celebrate Light on Landscape and Systematic, a playful and vibrant sculptural exhibition, on Friday, December 11, from 6pm.  Register for your free tickets to all Artspace events at artspacemackay.eventbrite.com
