New plant to improve Koumala’s water supply

Published: 23 Apr 2021

Koumala residents will soon benefit from an upgraded water treatment facility.

Contractor Clean Teq Water will begin construction of the Koumala Water Treatment Plant, at the western corner of Water Tower road, on Tuesday (April 27).

The plant is being built to reduce the hardness of the town’s water supply.

While Koumala’s treated water is of acceptable quality from a health perspective, the water is higher in hardness making it less amenable to drink.

The works will be carried out Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, and are expected to be completed by late-December 2021, weather permitting.

For the duration of the works, the speed limit near the work area will be reduced. Residents are asked to adhere to all signage and instructions.

Water main cut-in works for the project are scheduled to occur in late June. During these works traffic control will be in place near the work area.

This project is a $2million project, with the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program contributing $801,767.94.

The Koumala Water Quality Upgrade is a joint initiative of Mackay Regional Council and the Queensland Government.
