Pets should not be given as gifts

Council is reminding residents to avoid giving pets as a surprise gift this Christmas.

Pets are a lifetime commitment and you should consult with your friend or family member before giving them a pet to make sure they will be the right fit for their lifestyle.

However, if you have been thinking about adding a new four-legged friend to your family, Councillor Fran Mann encouraged residents to consider adoption.

“There are several local adoption agencies around the region that have animals in need of a forever home, including council’s Animal Management Centre,” Cr Mann said.

“By adopting a pet, you’re ultimately saving a life and giving an animal a second chance,” she said.

“You also get your pet registered and de-sexed as part of the adoption process.”

Council’s Animal Management Centre will be closed from 1.30pm on December 24, and will reopen on January 2, for the Christmas break.

However, officers will meet people by appointment to collect their pet should they be impounded.
