Adopt a pet for Christmas

Council is asking residents that are planning to add a four-legged friend to their family over the festive season, to consider adoption instead.

Cr Fran Mann said there were several local adoption agencies that had pets that needed to be rehomed.

“There are many benefits involved in adopting a pet,” she said.

“By adopting you’re ultimately saving a life and giving an animal a second chance.

“You also get your pet registered and de-sexed as part of the adoption process.”

Residents are reminded if you are considering giving a pet this Christmas to remember it’s a lifetime commitment.

“Never give a pet as a surprise gift, always consult the whole family to make sure they are the right fit,” Cr Mann said.

Pet safety is also a priority over the festive season with fireworks displays scheduled as part of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Loud noises such as fireworks can frighten pets and when animals get scared their natural instinct is to run away and hide.

Some ideas for preparing for fireworks include:

  • Make sure your pet is microchipped, registered and wearing their tag, so if it does go missing it can be returned as quickly and easily as possible
  • Create a hideout for your pet in a quiet room with as few windows as possible
  • Create a bed from blankets for burrowing and include an item with your scent on it
  • Take your dog for a walk in the afternoon to tire it out before the fireworks
  • Have chew treats available as this can distract your pet
  • Put on the TV or music to muffle outside noises and distract your pet.

Council’s Animal Management Centre will be closed over Christmas, but officers will meet people by appointment to collect their pet should it be impounded.
