Public programs return to council facilities

Mackay Regional Council Libraries are over-the-moon to announce the return of public programming.

And they are not alone – Artspace Mackay and the Sarina Youth Centre are also returning to normal programs now that COVID restrictions are easing.

Regular fixtures like STEAM club, book clubs, adult music, technology and children’s programs (baby bounce, toddler time etc) are all back from March 21.

Libraries are also rolling out some new programs and attractions.

One of those, installed yesterday on International Women’s Day (March 8), is a display spearheaded by participants from the “Who Do You Think She Is?” program.

Deputy Mayor Karen May said this was a group of women who met fortnightly at Dudley Denny City Library to research and discuss women in family history.

“They have constructed a special display containing twelve biographies in total, ranging from pioneers of the land, war nurses, musicians and businesswomen,” Cr May said.

“Each and every woman profiled has connected with and contributed to the establishment of the Mackay region as we know it today.”

Included in the display at Dudley Denny City Library is a 1930s wedding dress featured in a photo as part of the biography of Amelia (Millie) Cameron. The biographies will be split between Gordon White Library and Dudley Denny City Library, and will be on display until March 31.

Another exciting introduction is drop-in Tech Talks in the Pioneer Valley where residents can have their technology and device questions answered.

“These will kick off on Wednesday, March 23, from 9.30am to 11am and will be held on the last Wednesday of each month at Finch Hatton Central, 22 Anzac Parade,” Cr May said

“It’s a great way to make technology more accessible to our rural residents who are often the most in need of our Libraries’ digital resources.”

Artspace Mackay’s popular toddlers’ program BMA Kidspace will also return to the gallery on Tuesday, March 22.  Sarina Youth Centre has reopened for afterschool programs.  For details, head to their Facebook page.
