Rotary Lookout upgrade to be delivered in New Year

The $1,389,375 upgrade is jointly funded by state and local governments, with $694,687 provided through the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions (BoR) program and $694,688 from Mackay Regional Council.

Local construction company WHF Group has recently been awarded the contract and will start work in the second week of January, weather permitting.

Acting Mayor Amanda Camm said the Rotary Lookout would provide visitors with the perfect spot to take in spectacular city views.

“The upgrade works will see the current observation deck replaced with an architecturally designed viewing platform, giving visitors a safe space to enjoy the view in all weather conditions,” she said.

“This upgrade will transform the lookout into an iconic attraction for the region, offering an almost 360-degree view of Mackay, which will attract tourists passing through the region.”

Residents are advised that there may be increased traffic on Pollock Street, some noise and dust while the works are in progress, but these will be minimised where possible. Some on-street parking may also be impacted.

Construction will be carried out from Monday to Friday between 6.30am and 5pm. Some Saturday work may also be required.

Those who use the area for exercise are advised that the connection between High Street and Pollock Street will be closed during construction.

The work is expected to be completed by late May 2020, weather permitting.
