Sarina puts the call out to recognise exceptional women

Published: 17 Feb 2021

Past winners of the Mary Malone Perpetual Award have included tireless volunteers Colleen Burt and Dianne Barnett and Queensland Country Women’s Association stalwart Lyn Hackett.

The prestigious perpetual award is part of the Sarina Women’s Week Awards, which opened for nominations today.

Deputy Mayor Karen May encouraged Sarina residents to have a think about the women who had a positive impact on the community.

“This is Sarina’s own awards and it’s the perfect opportunity to recognise those amazing women who work exceptionally hard behind the scenes in our community and have an impact that is far-reaching,” Cr May said.

“We really want to hear about community leaders, volunteers, role models, mentors and those who simply go above and beyond for the community.

“Most of them do what they do because they love it, not for the recognition, however this is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge their efforts and say thank you.”

Cr May said the awards would be a little different this year due to COVID-safe requirements.

“This year, rather than a dinner, we will be doing a beautiful long table high tea at Third Ground Coffee House on Saturday, March 13. It’ll be a lovely event in the café’s garden with invited nominees and limited guests.

“It’ll be a little more low-key, however, we will be filming the presentations and sharing them via Sarina Neighbourhood Centre’s social media.”

To nominate someone, email their names, contact details and a brief paragraph about them to the Sarina Neighbourhood Centre team at sarinaneighbourhoodcentre@mackay.qld.gov.au

Don’t forget to include your name, email and phone number and let us know if you wish to remain anonymous.

Nominations close midnight, March 5.  To learn more, call the Neighbourhood Centre on 4961 9283.

The awards are an initiative of the Sarina Neighbourhood Centre and council and are supported by the Queensland Government. They coincide with Queensland Women's Week, which runs from March 3 to 14. The theme for the week is “Celebrate our present. Own our future.”.

The Mary Malone Perpetual Award was created in honour of the contributions made by Mary Malone to the Sarina community.
