Selfless seniors to be recognised in exhibition

Whether as volunteers, creatives, mentors, leaders, philanthropists or carers – seniors make an undeniable contribution to the way of life we value in our region.

Seniors Week (August 15-23) is the perfect time to recognise that contribution, and this year council have decided to get creative.

Mayor Greg Williamson said holding the annual Seniors Expo and Sarina Seniors Lunch wasn’t realistic this year, but staff had come up with the idea of a photo exhibition.

“The goal is to create a portrait exhibition, in digital format and on display at the Jubilee Community Centre, that acknowledges our more mature residents who go above and beyond,” Cr Williamson said.

“Photos will be taken by professional photographers from the region with the aim of capturing a cross section of selfless seniors in their elements,” he said.

“Whether that’s in the garden, fishing, working on a car, weaving, painting, working at a volunteer organisation or at a sports club – we anticipate a suite of photos that will be visually interesting and relatable to locals.

“We will select a series of photos featuring a diverse range of seniors from across the region and these will be displayed along with their 200-word nominations.

“Those not chosen for the exhibition will be included in a special commemorative booklet available to seniors free of charge.

“A rolling digital version of the exhibition will also be shown at the Sarina Neighbourhood Centre, Sarina Library, on social media and possibly at other council facilities.”

Nominations are open now and we hope to see all parts of the region represented - simply nominate a senior that you know by telling us about them in no more than 200 words and emailing your nomination to seniors@mackay.qld.gov.au

Please include your name and contact number and the name, contact number and address of the person you are nominating.  A photo of the person is optional but appreciated, as is any information about their passions, hobbies and interests to assist with planning photo shoots.

The Selfless Seniors Photo Project is an initiative of council and the Sarina Neighbourhood Centre. Nominations close Wednesday, July 8.
