Severe weather update

Published: 16 Jan 2023

Mackay's Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has stood up following updated flooding advice for the Pioneer River from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

The latest advice for our region shows a major flooding alert for Mirani at 2.45am (Jan 17). But based on council's flood modelling, the flood waters are not expected to breach the Pioneer River's banks at Mirani.

At 7am (Jan 17), there is also a moderate flooding alert for the Mackay urban area, which coincides with a high tide. Areas impacted will include farmland and some other low-lying areas, but no inundation of homes is expected.

If heavy rainfall in the Mackay urban area coincides with the high tide the water will take some time to drain away. However, once again this is expected to be minor localised flooding with no properties under threat. Residents are being advised to avoid parking in low-lying areas like table drains etc. Also, where possible avoid driving on the roads at this time.

LDMG will continue to monitor the situation overnight.

To stay up to date on the latest emergency information residents are being encouraged to regularly check the Disaster Dashboard.
