Tenderer awarded for resurfacing work at Bluewater Lagoon

Work is scheduled to start next month to repair the lining at Bluewater Lagoon during the winter maintenance period.

Council awarded the tender for resurfacing works at the facility to PWI Contracting Pty Ltd, trading as Aquatic Project Solutions, at today’s (April 12) ordinary council meeting.

Resurfacing works will be carried out to all three pools at the Bluewater Lagoon and will be staged over the 2023 and 2024 winter closure periods.

The 2023 winter closure will involve relining the children’s pool, and the main and top lagoons will be relined during the 2024 winter closure.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the work would allow the lagoon to continue to meet the needs of the community well into the future.

“In 2021, patchwork was completed to the lagoon’s surface as a short-term solution to fix leaks that were discovered in the lining of the lagoon,” Mayor Williamson said.

“This resurfacing work will be a long-term solution,” he said.

“We will be replacing the existing Quartzon finish of the lagoon’s floor with a Polyvinyl Chloride membrane system that will reduce maintenance requirements at the facility.

“In addition to resurfacing each lagoon with the PVC membrane liner, the underwater lighting will also be replaced as part of the scope of works.

Mayor Williamson said the Bluewater Lagoon was a vital piece of community infrastructure that enhanced the liveability of our region.

“The cost to complete this work is about $500,000 more than estimated and this will be addressed through a budget adjustment request so residents and future generations of Mackay locals can continue to enjoy the benefits of this facility,” he said.
