There’s some epic art for viewing this week at Artspace Mackay, Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens, and Fifth Lane in the city centre, where there will also be small activations to inspire young and old. It’s the last week to enter the Ride Mackay competition to win some great prizes, or perhaps you want to enjoy a show with a difference at the MECC.

1) Speed Date the Collection

Join the last Speed Date the Collection for the year and meet artists’ books from the Mackay Regional Council Art Collection. The informal Speed Date the Collection night is an opportunity for the community to become familiar with artists’ books in a social, interactive context.

2) Silver screen surprise: Sherlock Holmes the Woman in Green (1945)

3) Lagoons Gallery Exhibition ‘Birds in the Landscape’

Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens
Three artists present three different artwork displays using prints, paintings and miniature steel sculptures made from recycled nuts, bolts and steel. The exhibition is on display in the Lagoons Gallery within the Botanic Gardens café, open Wednesday to Friday, 9am to 2pm, and weekends, 8am to 4pm.

4) Mackay Regional Council Australia Day Awards 2022

5) Ride Mackay

Ride Mackay trails
Whether you walk, run, wheel or ride Mackay, active travel can be a great way to explore our beautiful region – or simply get from A to B. Council is giving away $2000 in gift vouchers thanks to Corry Cycles and Mackay Cycles. To enter, visit one of the Ride Mackay trails, scan the QR code and fill out the entry form. The competition will run until Tuesday, November 30.

6) 2022 Libris Awards opening

Artspace Mackay
Artspace Mackay’s biennial event, the Libris Awards, brings together works by leading and emerging artist book makers from across the country. The Awards are a chance to celebrate the art form and build on the gallery’s significant artist book collection. There are four awards, including special categories for locally-based artists and art students, with $14,500 in total prize money. The awards close on Wednesday, January 5.

7) Oral History Kits

9) Fifth Lane Street Activations

Every Friday, until December 17, 5pm to 8pm
Fifth Lane, between Gregory and Wood Streets
Small activations will be staged in Fifth Lane each Friday evening, ranging from face painting and musicians to Sensory Circus performers, to encourage families to visit the revamped space. Visitors can also check out the augmented reality experiences featuring the lane’s artwork. More info here:


A Not So Silent Night
