True North artwork upgrades underway

Residents may have noticed one of the buoy-like sculptures on Matsuura Drive being removed this week ahead of upgrade works.

The structure, part of the True North public artwork by Queensland artist Donna Marcus, will be upgraded by Stainless Aesthetics Pty Ltd, the same specialist company that constructed the works in 2012.

Council voted to engage the company for $35,000 to complete upgrade works at the general meeting of council on August 12, 2020.

Council consulted with Donna Marcus and voted to refresh the artwork by remaking the smaller of the two “buoys” in white, repainting the poles in white and upgrading the metal elements and fixtures of the larger “buoy”.

Elements of the larger buoy will be allowed to fade to create an effective contrast between the two elements and generate a new, enhanced interpretation of the works.

Once upgraded, the works will contribute positively to the visual appeal of the Bluewater Trail and set the tone for the collection of public art located along the Pioneer River.

The upgrades are expected to be complete in January 2021.
