Volunteers needed for National Tree Day

Published: 11 Jul 2019

Mackay Regional Council is calling for volunteers to help with National Tree Day.

This year’s event will be held on Sunday, July 28, from 9am to 11.30am at Illawong Park (corner of Illawong Drive and Petrie Street).

Council is aiming to plant up to 10,000 plants over two days during School’s Tree Day (July 26) and National Tree Day.

The project site, located adjacent to Far Beach, represents a narrow zone of coastal vegetation dominated by sheoak open forest and critically endangered microphyll vine forest, otherwise known as 'beach scrub'.

Reclaiming a 9000m2 section of Illawong Park during National Tree Day will assist in enhancing Mackay's natural environment and will ensure local native plant species flourish in this area.

Come down and get your hands dirty for a good cause by registering as a volunteer at treeday.planetark.org/find-a-site/volunteer/10021035.

Please wear sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and bring a water bottle. If you have your own gloves and gardening equipment, please bring them along. A BBQ will be provided to everyone who participates in this event.
