How much water are you using?

Water usage notices for the last six months’ billing period have now been issued.

Mackay region residents consumed 4,957,337 kilolitres of water, which equates to 1983 Olympic-sized swimming pools, in the six months from April to September.

This is a decrease in consumption of 15 per cent this billing period when compared to the same period last year.

Cr Martin Bella said residents should be applauded for their water conservation efforts, but they need to be extremely careful this summer.

“This decrease in consumption shows us that residents are becoming more aware of their water usage,” he said.

“But with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting less than 10mm of rainfall by the end of the year, water conservation is paramount.

“We still have some households that are using an excessive amount of water, more than 1000 litres a day. Council’s target is 200 litres per person per day,” Cr Bella said.

Residents are reminded to only water on their allocated days – even numbered properties on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and odd and unnumbered properties on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. There is no watering on Mondays.

Watering before 10am and after 4pm is one way to ensure water is used efficiently in the garden.

Using a handheld trigger hose rather than a sprinkler is another.

Cr Bella reminded residents that they could sign up to the myh2o website to keep track of their water use.

“The myh2o website allows you to keep track of your consumption and how much it’s costing you each day,” he said

“Only a few weeks ago, myh2o alerted us to a leak on my daughter’s property. We were losing about 15-20 litres an hour and it prompted us to look for a leaky tap

“Finding this leak not only saved us money, but it saved us a huge amount of water,” Cr Bella said.

Residents can sign up by registering online at myh2o.

Water notices are due on December 18.
