Water quality upgrade for Koumala residents

Published: 08 Dec 2022

Koumala residents will enjoy improved water quality now that work is finished on council’s new water treatment plant.

Contractor Clean Teq Water began construction of the Koumala Water Treatment Plant in late-April 2021, with the plant being fully commissioned last week.

The $2 million plant includes a water softening unit to reduce the hardness of the town’s water supply as well as water storage tanks and a pump station onsite.

Mayor Greg Williamson said while data showed that Koumala’s treated water was of acceptable quality from a health perspective, the water was higher in hardness than is ideal.

“Hardness can make the water less amenable to drink, and our aim is to always provide the best possible outcome for our residents,” Mayor Williamson said.

“The plant has been specifically built to reduce the hardness of the town’s water supply, so this is a terrific result,” he said.

As part of the works, the old water tower has also been decommissioned and three storage tanks have been installed onsite to cater to the needs of the growing Koumala community.

The Koumala Water Treatment Plant is located at the western corner of Water Tower Road, adjacent to the Gordon Morrison Sports Ground.

The Koumala Water Quality Upgrade is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies program in association with Mackay Regional Council.

This is a $2 million project, with the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program contributing $801,767.94.
