Working together to improve road safety

Published: 26 Aug 2020

Mackay Regional Council has been successful in securing funding from the Australian Government for $375,086 to upgrade the Boundary and Cowleys roads intersection in Ooralea.

Council has actively pursued funding for the upgrade as figures show that from 2013 to 2017 five serious accidents occurred at the intersection, four of which required hospitalisation.

The new design is aimed at improving road safety and ultimately reducing the number of traffic accidents and near misses at this intersection.

The new design will include an offset-T intersection, helping to slow vehicle speed and distinguishing Cowleys Road as the through road.

Construction is set to begin in early-September and will continue until mid-October, weather permitting. Works will be completed between the hours of 6am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

The intersection will remain open under traffic control while the offset-T intersection is constructed, and motorists are advised of short delays and changed traffic conditions for the duration of the works.

Motorists are asked to obey all signs and directions of traffic controllers.
