Streets Named After WWI and WWII War Causalities

The then Mackay City Council asked members of the public to submit names of family members who were casualties of war and whose records showed they were born in Mackay, enlisted in Mackay, or whose parents and/or themselves lived in Mackay (and district) at that time.

As a result, many Mackay streets are named and dedicated in honour of the fallen who gave their lives for us to enjoy peace.

Street Name Project (2012)

To commemorate our fallen soldiers and heighten awareness of this history as part of Mackay 150 celebrations in 2012, council launched its ‘Lest We Forget Soldier Street Naming Project’ to install specially designed street blades.

Much of the information and research was conducted by Basil Graham, local history enthusiast and students from Mackay North State High School 'Lest We Forget' Project.

This was a tangible way for council to promote our stories, our people and our places as part of the Mackay 150 commemorations and recognise the supreme sacrifices of those soldiers who lived in our region.
