Community Engagement

Mackay Regional Council is committed to engaging with the community in relation to projects and plans to better the region we all love to live, work and play in.

Whether it be simply notifying residents of a footpath being constructed in their neighbourhood or seeking deeper community input on major projects, strategic policy or proposed improvements to their parks, council sees community engagement as imperative to building an involved community.

Council has a dedicated Community Engagement team who work with a variety of departments, such as Capital Works, Parks and Strategic Planning. This team ensures residents are involved in some way, whether it be purely informed or involved in providing input into council projects.

Council is committed to working with residents to understand issues specific to their neighbourhood and the needs of each community. Our online community engagement hub Connecting Mackay provides a platform for community to become informed of projects and offer input on council projects, activities and decisions. It also provides an avenue for council to ensure residents are regularly updated on projects.

Importantly, community engagement does not replace the decision-making functions of council. There are many factors which can influence the decision-making process, including costs, technical aspects, environmental concerns, legal requirements and political commitment.

Rather, these processes are designed to ensure that council has access to a broad range of information about community needs, opinions and options prior to decisions being made.

Without the input of the community though council cannot make a fully informed decision.

The act of engaging also gives the community the opportunity to understand the process and all the factors involved in council making its decisions.
