Walkerston
Tucked just 10km to the west of Mackay, Walkerston's entrance is flanked by green fields of cane. The Peak Downs Highway runs straight through town and crosses Bakers Creek at Kirkup Bridge.
Walkerston may have the heart of a small country town but the past three years have been underscored by rapid growth. Although there were already a good number of local services in place, new commercial development along the main street has made the town even more self-sufficient.
Walkerston's main appeal lies in its location; at the entrance to the beautiful Pioneer Valley. It's just that little bit closer for miners who face long commutes out west and yet, it still has good proximity to Mackay's beaches and CBD.
Walkerston State Primary School is easily recognisable by the immense African sausage tree that is located at the end of the sports field.
