Seed Library
SEED LIBRARY PROGRAM
‘Sow, grow, save and share’
Borrow seeds instead of books, free with your library membership.
Library members can 'borrow' seeds to sow, grow, save and share. Once your crop has grown, allow at least one plant from each to go to seed or collect seeds from your produce and return your collected seeds in the ‘collection envelope’ provided in your seed packet, to the library.
Your donated seeds are then made available for library members to plant next season. The Seed Library allows our communities to swap, grow and work towards seed sustainability, seed stocks hardened to our local environment and education in the Mackay region.
See what seeds we stock.
How does it work?
BORROW | ... the seed packets |
PLANT | ... the seeds in your garden |
DONATE | ... your saved seeds back to the Seed Library once you've nurtured your plants to maturity |
WHEN IS THE SEED LIBRARY AVAILABLE?
Gordon White Library has a permanent Seed Library, available to library members during library opening hours.
A travelling Seed Library will be available across all of our library branches. Stay up to date with this schedule by signing up to our fortnightly eNewsletters and following us on social media.
HOW DO I TAKE PART?
Library members are welcome to two seed packets per week to take home and grow. When your plant has grown and set seed, harvest some of these seeds to donate back to the Seed Library.
RETURNING SEEDS?
Use the ‘return envelope’ supplied with your initial seed packet to donate your cultivated seeds back to the Seed Library. Fill out the details including as much information about your seeds as possible:
- Common name
- Variety
- Date collected
- Conditions of growth (e.g. stake, sunlight, water, etc)
- When to plant
Return your seeds to any of our library branches. For more information, see your friendly library team.
