Waste Levy 2019

The Queensland Government is developing a new resource, recovery and waste strategy to help reduce the disposal of waste to landfill, increase recycling rates and recover valuable resources.

The centrepiece of the strategy will be a waste disposal levy.

> Who is introducing the levy?

The Queensland Government is introducing the waste levy.

> When does the levy commence?

It is proposed that the waste levy will commence on July 1, 2019.

> What does the levy mean for Mackay households?

The levy does not apply to wheelie bin waste or self-hauled residential waste.

> What does the levy mean for business?

Businesses will incur the waste levy. For businesses to minimise paying the waste levy, they will need to reduce waste generation and recycle as much as possible. For more information, and to register your interest for a free Business Recycling education session, click here

> How much is the levy?

> Where in Queensland will the levy apply?

Mackay Regional Council is included in the proposed levy zone.

> Can I get a waste Levy exemption or discount?

It is proposed that some wastes will be exempt from the levy such as waste produced from declared natural disasters. It is also proposed that application for exemptions or discounts can be made for waste such items dumped on charities that cannot be used or recycled.
