Mackay wins as Australia's best town of the year

The Mackay Region in North Queensland has won an impressive accolade very early in 2018, with the recent announcement it has been recognised as the Australian Town of the Year in the inaugural awards bestowed by renowned online booking platform, Wotif.

Outshining destinations such as Byron Bay, Port Macquarie and Bateman’s Bay, Mackay’s selection was based on traveller demand, affordability, year-on-year interest and the number of accommodation properties available, with these features also being of great interest to business event planners.

Specific destination highlights for visitors included viewing wallabies and kangaroos gathering on the beach at sunrise at beautiful Cape Hillsborough, visiting pristine Eungella National Park to see elusive platypus in the wild, and having ready access to uncrowded beaches and the Great Barrier Reef just offshore.  All these elements are popular and frequently included components of social and touring programmes for conferences held at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC).

Nicky Hansen, Sales & Business Development Coordinator with the MECC acknowledged that the recent award would serve to enhance the destination’s profile across all markets, including business events.

“We receive such positive feed-back from conferences held here,” she said. “The astonishing amount of repeat business is testimony to the fact that business event planners seem to have discovered the benefits of offering a “new” regional destination that has so much to offer and yet is available at an affordable rate.”

The Mackay Region is participating at AIME on Stand No. 1930 and will be winning the hearts and taste buds of show visitors when they distribute several hundred pieces of delectable Mango Rum Liqueur Fudge, a specialty of the region, during the two days of the show.  It is produced as a joint venture between Le Sorelle Coffee House in Bowen who hand-make the smooth, creamy fudge, and the award-winning Sarina Sugar Shed whose mango rum liqueur provides the exceptional flavour.
