Several major projects in the Mackay region add to job creation, increased business activity, infrastructure development, tourism boost and industry diversification and ultimately economic growth.

Mackay Waterfront

Investment: $200M
Area: Mackay City
Timeline: 2016 - 2036

The Mackay Waterfront is a long-term 20-year project encompassing approximately 172 hectares. The project area is centrally located within the Mackay urban area and is driving economic and community outcomes through job creation, improving liveability and tourism as well as attracting new industries and investment to the region.

The bold vision for the future of Mackay aims to build upon the natural setting and the established character of the city. In doing this it will reconnect Mackay and its visitors to the waterfront, strengthen the region’s economy, create a range of inner-city living options, promote the region as a key Queensland tourist destination and facilitate development and investment.

Pioneer Valley Mountain Bike Trail

Investment: $26.9M
Area: Pioneer Valley
Timeline: 2018 - 2026

The Pioneer Valley Mountain Bike Trails will comprise approximately 95km of single-direction mountain bike trails that cater for all levels of riders and provide visitors with the opportunity to navigate through Australia’s longest stretch of lush subtropical rainforest, Eungella National Park to Crediton State Forest.

Construction of Stage 1 of the project is underway and anticipated to be finalised in 2023.

This project boasts a unique opportunity to provide mountain bikers with a world class biking experience – that will lead to significant economic benefits and offers a huge range of opportunities for businesses.

Resources Centre of Excellence

Investment: $6M
Area: Paget
Timeline: 2022 – 2025

The expansion of the Resources Centre of Excellence (RCOE) is a major investment ensuring Queensland has access to a skilled workforce to capture, incubate and grow the industries of the future.

New economy minerals are vital to many emerging and renewable energy technologies, including electric vehicles and long-life batteries, and for products in key sectors like medical, defence and scientific research.

The hub will deliver a new facility that meets current and emerging resources industry needs, as well as continue to embed the RCOE’s successful model of connecting the brightest minds in resources research, technology, education and METS to shape the resources industry of the future.

Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro project

Investment: $12B
Area: Pioneer Valley
Timeline: 2022 – 2032

Long duration pumped hydro has the scale, operational flexibility and low energy costs necessary to ensure the ongoing security and reliability of supply for Queensland’s future clean electricity system with high levels of wind and solar generation.

The Queensland Government has identified a site in the Pioneer Valley for a long duration pumped hydro energy storage facility.

Queensland Hydro will carry out detailed analytical studies until mid-2024 to refine knowledge of the pumped hydro potential between the proposed upper reservoirs in the Burdekin catchment and the lower reservoir near Netherdale.

The project, if approved, could support several thousand jobs over the construction period and will be one of the largest pumped hydro facilities in the world.

Fixed wireless infrastructure upgrade

Investment: $6M
Area: Pioneer Valley
Timeline: 2022 – 2024

QCN Fibre, in partnership with Channel Wireless, is delivering a fixed wireless infrastructure at each township of Finch Hatton, Pinnacle, Gargett, Eungella and the surrounding areas of Marian and Mirani in the Pioneer Valley. The new solution will provide a fixed wireless infrastructure with a ten-fold increase in digital speeds for this area.

This funding will directly benefit more than 4500 residents, 1550 households, small to medium-sized businesses, schools, council offices and government services such as Ambulance, Police and Health Centres by providing substantively improved network speeds compared with the existing NBN fixed service.

Mackay Pilot Plant

Investment: $16M

Timeline: 2024

The Queensland Government is providing funding support to expand the QUT Mackay Renewable Biocommodities Pilot Plant (MRBPP), a research and development facility that converts biomass into biofuels, green chemicals and other bioproducts.

The expansion will enhance the development of regional biomanufacturing industries, attract further investment, and create local jobs, building on Queensland's growing biofutures industry.

The funding will be used to test a wider range of new and emerging technologies at scale, enabling companies to rapidly demonstrate their technologies and products for market testing.

The project will be supported as part of the Trailblazer Food and Beverage Accelerator as the first pilot scale precision fermentation facility in Australia.

Mackay Base Hospital

Investment: $250M
Area: West Mackay
Timeline: 2026

The Health Care and Social Assistance sector is the largest employing industry in the Mackay region, employing 15.3 per cent of the local workforce and disbursing $715 million in wages. Employing more than 3000 staff, Mackay Hospital and Health Services provides extensive health services across eight major facilities.

The Queensland Government is investing $250 million to expand the hospital’s capacity by an extra 128 beds to meet rising demand for healthcare of a growing community. A major project for the region, the expansion will create 600 new jobs during construction phase.

Northern Beach Community Hub

Investment: $40M
Area: Northern Beaches
Timeline: 2018 – 2024 for initial stages (other stages to follow beyond)

Mackay Regional Council has identified the need to establish a community hub to service the existing and growing population of the Northern Beaches.

The Northern Beaches population catchment had a population of 20,000  in 2018, and is projected to grow to 30,000 by 2036, based on the 2018 Queensland Government Population Projections.

The Northern Beaches Community Hub will provide a focal point for services and activities supporting:

  • health and well-being
  • education, learning and employment
  • open space and recreation
  • community services
  • active transport node
  • cultural amenity and commercial offerings.

Seaforth Esplanade

Investment: $8.6M
Area: Seaforth
Timeline: 2020 – 2023

The idyllic 5.77ha Seaforth Esplanade Reserve is a sought-after destination for residents of Seaforth and surrounding areas, along with visitors from within the Mackay region and beyond.

In partnership with the community, the aim is to transform the Seaforth Esplanade into a vibrant recreational asset to enhance sense of community wellbeing and economic opportunity.

This project is a key driver for economic sustainability for the area. Creating a desirable destination by providing distinctive, attractive and functional public spaces is an effective means to increase visitation.
