Mackay's agriculture industry is a significant contributor to the region's economy, with sugar cane being the primary agricultural product.

The region has approximately 80,000 hectares of cultivated land dedicated to sugar production, with around 69,000 hectares harvested for cane. The region is one of the largest sugar-producing areas in Australia, accounting for over a third of the country's total sugar production, of which around 85 per cent is exported globally.

The Mackay region is recognised as one of the most innovative and sustainable sugar cane growing and milling areas in Australia.

The industry is supported by research and development programs and modern infrastructure, facilitating the efficient movement of goods. The use of renewable energy sources and green chemicals is an essential aspect of sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring the industry's continued viability and minimising its impact on the environment.

About 30 per cent of Mackay’s electricity supply is currently created by Mackay Sugar, via a co-generation electricity plant fuelled by bagasse, a waste product from sugar cane crushing. The green energy electricity plant reduces Queensland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 200,000 tonnes equivalent carbon dioxide (CO2e) each year.

The region's fertile soil and favourable climate make it an ideal location for growing a wide range of crops, including tropical fruits and vegetables.
