Health care and social assistance
Mackay includes the critical health infrastructure required to support the growing region and surrounding areas. Health care and social assistance is the largest employing sector in the region contributing 14.6 per cent of total wages paid.
The demand for health services will continue to grow in the future with an ageing population and increasing propensity for access to a higher level of health service.
The Mackay region currently has the following key health related infrastructure:

- Sarina Hospital and Primary Health Care Centre
- Specialist medical and health care facilities, including Icon Cancer Centre
- Allied health services
- Local health facilities in outlying urban areas, including Sarina, Walkerston, Marian and Mirani
