The region is home to an advanced METS sector that focuses on innovation, precision, and highly technical skills, with a global outlook and numerous export opportunities.

Metallurgical coal, which is mined in the neighbouring Greater Whitsunday region, is a high-quality coal product primarily used in the production of steel. As global demand for steel continues to rise, the demand for metallurgical coal is also expected to increase. As one of the six key growth industries identified by the Queensland State Government, Mackay’s METS sector will continue to expand and capitalise on our role as the service industry hub of the Bowen and Galilee Basins.

The Mackay-based Resources Centre of Excellence (RCOE) provides world-class facilities for resource development and ensures Mackay remains a world leader in mining expertise and innovation in the METS sector. The RCOE includes a simulated underground coal mine to assist with training, research, product innovation and demonstration, focusing on job creation and growing the skills of the future.

With significant growth expected, the region has ample industrial land supply to cater for the industry needs of any business wanting to locate themselves in the region.
