Port of Hay Point Lookout

The Port of Hay Point Lookout overlooks two separate coal terminals, Hay Point Coal Terminal and Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal. These ports are amongst the largest coal export ports in the world, servicing coal mines in Central Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The port administration building features a public viewing gallery offering fantastic views of the two coal terminals.

The lookout is signposted from Hay Point Road and is located 23km north east of Sarina and 40km south of Mackay.

The terminals are operated independently, each one comprises rail unloading equipment, stockpiles with stacking and reclaiming equipment, conveyors and ship loaders on offshore wharves. The two wharves at Hay Point (1.5km Hay Point Services and 3.8km Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal) stretch out into the Pacific Ocean and fill massive bulk carriers with coking coal bound for every corner of the globe.

Loading takes place 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. More than 5000 ships have departed Dalrymple Bay since the terminal was opened in 1983 and more than 7300 ships from Hay Point since its opening in 1970.

Jilalan Rail Yards Lookout

The Jilalan Rail Yards are the single largest export coal rail network in Australia. The lookout includes interpretive signage with surrounding parkland forming a key part of the Mackay Region Coal Heritage Trail, showcasing the pit-to-port journey of coal in the area.

The rail yard has seen significant expansion works, which have enhanced the capacity of the coal rail network and allowed further growth of coal exports from the Bowen Basin. The expansion has also increased the rail yard’s capacity to 42 trains a day, carrying 130 million tonnes per annum.
